Bhagavad Gita World

The soul is never born and never dies

The soul is neither born nor does it ever die. Unborn, eternal, everlasting and ancient, it is not slain when the body is slain.

न जायते म्रियते वा कदाचिन्
नायं भूत्वा भविता वा न भूयः ।
अजो नित्यः शाश्वतोऽयं पुराणो
न हन्यते हन्यमाने शरीरे ॥

na jāyate mriyate vā kadācin nāyaṃ bhūtvā bhavitā vā na bhūyaḥ .
ajo nityaḥ śāśvato.ayaṃ purāṇo na hanyate hanyamāne śarīre ॥

The first thing Shri Krishna explains to the grieving Arjuna is that we are not the body but the imperishable soul. This understanding softens the fear of death and gives the heart support even when loved ones depart.

Life lesson: do not see yourself as only the body; the awareness within you is eternal.
