Holy Places (Dham)

From Mathura and Vrindavan to Dwarka and Puri — the sacred places of Shri Krishna.

  • Mathura – The sacred city on the Yamuna where Bhagavan Shri Krishna appeared in the prison of Kansa.
  • Vrindavan – The forest of Braj where Shri Krishna herded cows, played his flute and performed the Raas Leela with Radha and the gopis.
  • Gokul – The village of Nanda Baba and Mother Yashoda, where baby Krishna was raised and stole butter from the gopis' homes.
  • Barsana – The village of Shri Radha, crowned by the Ladli ji temple on Bhanugarh hill and famous for its Lathmar Holi.
  • Govardhan – Giriraj Govardhan, the hill Shri Krishna lifted on his finger to shelter the people of Braj from Indra's storm.
  • Dwarka – Shri Krishna's royal capital on the western sea, where Dwarkadhish reigns in the Jagat Mandir; one of the Char Dham.
  • Kurukshetra – Jyotisar – Dharmakshetra Kurukshetra, where at Jyotisar, beneath a banyan tree, Shri Krishna spoke the Bhagavad Gita to Arjuna.
  • Jagannath Puri – One of the Char Dham on the Odisha coast, where Shri Krishna is worshipped as Jagannath with Balabhadra and Subhadra.
  • Udupi – The Shri Krishna Matha of Karnataka, founded by Shri Madhvacharya, where the Lord turned to give darshan to the devotee Kanakadasa.
  • Guruvayur – Kerala's beloved shrine where four-armed Shri Krishna is worshipped as Guruvayurappan in the mood of a child.
  • Nathdwara – The principal seat of Pushtimarg in Rajasthan, where Shrinathji, the lifter of Govardhan, is served as a divine child.
  • Dakor – The Ranchhodrai dham of Gujarat, where the Lord came from Dwarka out of love for his devotee Bodana.
  • Somnath – Bhalka Tirth – Prabhas, where at Bhalka Tirth the hunter Jara's arrow struck Shri Krishna and from Dehotsarg Tirth he returned to his eternal abode.
