To protect the good

To protect the righteous, to destroy the wicked and to re-establish dharma, I appear age after age.

परित्राणाय साधूनां विनाशाय च दुष्कृताम् ।
धर्मसंस्थापनार्थाय सम्भवामि युगे युगे ॥

paritrāṇāya sādhūnāṃ vināśāya ca duṣkṛtām .
dharmasaṃsthāpanārthāya sambhavāmi yuge yuge ॥

Together with the previous verse, this verse states the purpose of the avatar. Shri Krishna's whole life, from the slaying of Kansa to Kurukshetra, is an example of this promise.
