The immortal bhajan of Gujarat's great poet-saint Narsinh Mehta (15th century), describing the qualities of a true Vaishnava, a devotee of God.

Original text

Narsinh Mehta of Junagadh was a great devotee of Krishna. This Gujarati bhajan of his was dearly loved by Mahatma Gandhi and is sung across India today.

Meaning: a true Vaishnava is one who feels the pain of others; who helps those in sorrow and yet lets no pride enter the mind. Such a person respects everyone in the world, speaks ill of no one, and keeps speech, action and mind pure and steady — blessed is the mother of such a one.

He sees all with an equal eye, has given up craving, regards another's wife as his mother, never speaks an untruth and never lays a hand on another's wealth. Delusion and illusion do not touch him; firm detachment lives in his mind; his heart is absorbed in the name of Rama — all the places of pilgrimage dwell in his body.

He is free of greed and deceit and has driven away lust and anger. Narsaiyo (Narsinh) says: by the sight of such a person, seventy-one generations are uplifted.
