Bhagavad Gita World

Krishnam Vande Jagadgurum

The well-known salutation verse recited before reading the Gita: I bow to Krishna, the teacher of the world.

Original text

वसुदेवसुतं देवं कंसचाणूरमर्दनम् ।
देवकीपरमानन्दं कृष्णं वन्दे जगद्गुरुम् ॥

Author: Traditional

This verse belongs to the Gita-dhyana and Krishnashtakam tradition and is recited at the start of a Gita reading, katha or satsang.

Meaning: I bow to Krishna, the teacher of the world — the divine son of Vasudeva, the crusher of Kansa and Chanura, the supreme joy of Devaki.

The word "Jagadguru" reminds us that Krishna is not only a deity to be worshipped but also, through the Gita, the teacher of all humanity. Reciting it before study is a humble request for His guidance.
