Dwarkadhish — King of Dwarka

As lord of the golden city he raised in the sea, Krishna is called "Dwarkadhish". The Dwarkadhish temple in Gujarat is one of the four great dhams.

"Dwarka" and "adhish", lord: Dwarkadhish is the king of Dwarka. When the cowherd boy of Vraja became the leader of the Yadavas, this royal aspect of the Lord came to the fore. For devotees the name joins his sweetness with his majesty.

According to the Shrimad Bhagavatam, Canto 10, to keep his people safe from the attacks of Jarasandha and Kalayavana, Krishna obtained land from the sea and had the divine architect Vishvakarma build a wondrous city there, with splendid palaces, gardens and avenues. Here the Lord lived as a householder with Rukmini and his other queens, and here his poor childhood friend Sudama came carrying a handful of flattened rice, to be welcomed by the Lord with tears of joy.

Today the Dwarkadhish temple, also called Jagat Mandir, stands on the bank of the Gomti in Dwarka, Gujarat, and is one of the four great dhams of India. The great flag flying from its spire is changed several times a day, and offering a flag is considered a rare blessing. Nearby Bet Dwarka is also a place of pilgrimage. Janmashtami is celebrated here in grand style, and the whole town rings with the cry "Jai Dwarkadhish".
