Trinavarta, the Whirlwind Demon

The demon Trinavarta came as a whirlwind and carried baby Krishna into the sky, but the Lord became so heavy that the demon himself came crashing down.

One day Mother Yashoda was cuddling her little son on her lap. Suddenly she felt his weight increasing, as if a mountain were sitting on her knees. Unable to bear it, she set the child down on the ground in amazement, remembered the Lord in her heart, and turned to her household work.

At that moment the demon Trinavarta, sent by Kansa, arrived in Gokul in the form of a fierce whirlwind. So much dust filled the air that darkness fell in broad daylight. No one could see anything, and the roar of the storm frightened everyone. In that darkness the demon lifted baby Krishna and carried him up into the sky.

When the storm died down, Yashoda saw that the place where she had left her child was empty. She fell to the ground weeping. The gopis too began searching everywhere for Kanhaiya with tears in their eyes.

Up in the sky, Trinavarta felt the child becoming heavier than a mountain. He could fly no further. With his tiny hands, Krishna gripped the demon's throat so firmly that he could not shake him off. His breath stopped, his eyes bulged, and he fell lifeless onto a rock in Gokul. The gopis found the terrible demon lying there, with Krishna playing safely on his chest. They ran, picked up the child and placed him in Yashoda's arms. Everyone thanked their past good deeds and the grace of the Lord.

Some time later, as Yashoda was nursing him, the child yawned, and in his little mouth she saw the whole universe, with the sky, sun, moon, mountains and oceans. This leela reminds us that however strong the storms of life may be, the weight of the Lord, his power, brings every proud force down to the ground.
