Explanation

Continuing to describe the fruit of knowledge, Krishna now reveals its boundless power through a bold example: ‘api ched asi papebhyah sarvebhyah papa-krittamah’ — even if you were the worst sinner among all sinners. Clearly Arjuna is no such person; Krishna takes an imaginary extreme to underline the glory of knowledge. If knowledge can save even the greatest sinner, there can be no doubt about the ordinary seeker.

‘Jnana-plavenaiva sarvam vrijinam santarishyasi’ — by the boat of knowledge alone you will cross over all sin. Worldly existence and sin are pictured as a vast ocean, and knowledge is the boat that carries one across. Notice that the boat does not dry up the ocean; it carries one safely over it. Likewise, knowledge does not let the seeker drown in the sea of actions. The prefix ‘sam’ shows that the crossing is complete and secure.

Shankara adds a subtle point: for one seeking liberation, even merit (dharma) is a kind of ‘sin’, since it too binds one to the cycle of birth and death. So ‘sarvam vrijinam’, all wrongdoing, includes both sin and merit, and knowledge carries one beyond both.

This verse is a great message of hope. No one is shut out of the spiritual path because of his past. It is not a licence to do wrong; it means that anyone who turns with sincere repentance towards Self-knowledge can transform his life. Later, in 9.30–31, Krishna will give the same assurance in the context of devotion.

Context

In 4.35 Krishna said that knowledge destroys delusion for ever and reveals all beings in the Self and in the Lord. Here He says that even the greatest sinner crosses over all sin by the boat of knowledge. In the next verse (4.37) He uses the image of fire to show that the fire of knowledge burns all actions to ashes.

Life lesson

Do not lose heart under the weight of past mistakes. True understanding and a step taken in the right direction can transform anyone's life; the door to Self-knowledge is always open to all.
