Explanation
The wisdom that had been buried under the dust of ages, the Lord now reveals afresh to Arjuna. The emphasis falls on ‘sa evayam’ — that very same. This is no new or invented doctrine; it is the identical eternal Yoga once given to the Sun, to Manu and to the royal sages. Arjuna thus becomes the new link in a chain that time had broken.
Krishna also gives the reason: ‘bhakto'si me sakha cha’ — you are My devotee and also My friend. Spiritual wisdom is received not by sharpness of intellect alone but by fitness of heart. To be a devotee is to have faith and surrender; to be a friend is to have closeness, trust and openness. Arjuna possesses both, and so he is qualified to receive this secret.
‘Rahasyam hy etad uttamam’ — this is the supreme secret. It is called a secret because it cannot be grasped by the senses or by mere reasoning, and not everyone who hears it can absorb it. Shankara says it is supreme because it leads to the highest good, and secret because it is to be guarded and shared only with the worthy. Ramanuja sees here the Lord's tender grace, which opens even the deepest truth to a beloved devotee.
The verse also reveals that the bond between God and the soul need not be only that of master and servant; it can be friendship too. Where a heart holds both love and reverence, the Lord Himself descends as its teacher.
Context
In 4.2 Krishna said this Yoga had been lost over time. Here He says He has given this same ancient Yoga to Arjuna because Arjuna is His devotee and friend. This statement raises a question in Arjuna's mind, which he voices in the next verse (4.4).
Life lesson
The highest wisdom comes to the one whose heart holds faith and love. Rather than merely piling up information, the real discipline is to make ourselves worthy vessels of wisdom.
