Explanation
This verse restates the point of 11.48, now as part of the chapter’s conclusion and as preparation for the answer that follows. The Vedas, austerity, charity and worship (ijyā) are four great pillars of religious life. Krishna says that none of them, on its own, can bring about a vision of Him ‘evaṁ-vidhaḥ’ — in the way Arjuna has seen Him.
Repetition in scripture is a way of giving emphasis. Krishna wants it to sink deep into Arjuna’s mind that what he received was not the product of ritual achievement but of something of a different order altogether — love met by grace. The words ‘as you have seen Me’ also confirm the authenticity of Arjuna’s experience.
It would be a mistake to conclude that the Vedas and sacrifices are useless. Shankara explains that such disciplines purify the mind and make it fit for knowledge and devotion; but when they are cut off from love of God and performed only for their fruits, they cannot reach the highest vision. Ramanuja likewise holds that study, worship and the rest gain their true value when they become limbs of bhakti.
The verse thus leaves a question hanging: if not by these, then how? The answer comes in the next verse, simply and beautifully: ‘bhaktyā tv ananyayā’ — by undivided devotion.
Context
In 11.52 Krishna said this form is so rare that even the gods long to see it. Here He lists the means by which it cannot be attained. The next verse (11.54) gives the positive answer: only by exclusive devotion can He be known, seen and entered into.
Life lesson
Ritual, charity and discipline reach their fullness only when love and surrender stand behind them. Do not treat outward practices as the goal; join them to devotion of the heart, and they become a path to God.
